A very fine mid Victorian silver and glass claret jug with cast vineleaves, grapes and tendrils about the body and neck with a shield shaped armorial to the front depicting Bacchus wielding a shield and an arrow above which is the motto: “Facta non Verba” which means Deeds not Words or more familiarly, “Actions speak louder than words.” The handle is in the form of a vine stem realistically cast. The lid has a handle depicting vineleaves and a bunch of grapes. The neck is of ribbed shell form. The glass body is faceted to the neck and base and the central body is finely engraved with grapes, vineleaves and stems.
Marked to the underside of the neck and inside of the lid with marks for London 1860 by George Emmerton.
This is an absolutely spectacular claret jug of the very highest order. Both silver work and the glass display astonishing artistry and the whole is in first class condition. Highly unusual and rarely encountered this really makes an exceptional addition to any table setting.
Height: 11.5 inches or 29 cm
